April 2013 Stem careers in demand Every parent dreams of a flourishing future for their kids, but does every parent work for it? Dreaming is easy, but making the dream come true is hard. Our kids look up to us for guidance, for making the right decisions. But what if we fail them? What if we make wrong decisions for them? It is better to let the kids decide. Explain to them the importance of stem, detail them about different stem careers, see their interests, give them options and then wait for their decision.

Project ownership (I. Hernandez and A. Woodcock, personal communication): This nine-item scale assesses the extent to which individuals perceive ownership of and independence in the conduct of their research project (i.e., “Was I in control of my research project?”). This scale emphasizes the agency and mentorship facets of the ownership construct (a complete list of item contents is provided in the Supplemental Material). Participants responded to items on a scale from 1 (not at all) to 5 (to a very large extent). A composite score was created by averaging all items together, such that higher scores indicated greater ownership over the research project. Representing women in STEM careers Want to work at NASA? Organisations and institutions are doing their best to fill those jobs in STEM, but often struggle to find qualified and capable talent. Recent findings from the Department of Skills, Education and Employment shows that close to 60% employers face difficulties recruiting for STEM occupations, compared to 41% for non-STEM jobs. The main reason? Most applicants lack the technical skillsets and qualifications to land jobs in STEM. Computer Systems Analyst Some STEM fields do show more diversity than others. Young women, under 29, now comprise 56% of the science and engineering workforce, though they are better represented in some STEM subspecialties than others. For instance, they are a majority of healthcare practitioners/technicians. In other STEM occupations, they are not as well represented, especially in engineering and computer jobs. One statistic states that only one in every seven engineers is female.
